• Blood enters the kidneys through the renal artery, which branches into smaller blood vessels and then into the nephrons (the functional units of the kidneys).

• As blood passes through the glomerulus, waste products, excess substances like water, salts, and small molecules, are filtered out into the Bowman’s capsule. This is the first step of filtration.

2. Reabsorption:

• After the initial filtration, the filtered fluid, known as filtrate, moves through the nephron’s tubules.
• As the filtrate moves through the proximal convoluted tubule, loop of Henle, and distal convoluted tubule, the body reabsorbs important substances such as water, glucose, amino acids, and ions (like sodium, potassium, and calcium) back into the bloodstream.
• This process ensures that the body retains what it needs and maintains a proper balance of fluids and electrolytes.

3. Secretion:

• In addition to filtering the blood, the kidneys also actively secrete certain waste products and excess substances that were not filtered initially. This occurs mainly in the distal convoluted tubule.
• Examples of substances secreted include hydrogen ions, potassium ions, and ammonia, helping to maintain the body’s acid-base balance.

4. Excretion:

• The remaining waste and excess substances in the nephron, now called urine, flow from the distal convoluted tubule into collecting ducts and then into the renal pelvis, which connects to the ureter.
• The ureter carries urine to the bladder, where it is stored until it is ready to be excreted from the body through the urethra.

Key Functions of the Kidneys:

• Waste removal: Kidneys remove waste products like urea (from the breakdown of proteins), creatinine (from muscle metabolism), and toxins from the body.
• Fluid balance: By regulating the amount of water reabsorbed into the blood, kidneys help maintain proper hydration and fluid balance.
